SRINAGAR: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has arrested a man accused of impersonating as a Duty Officer to the Lieutenant Governor and duping people of over Rs 50 lakh through fake promises of jobs and land allotments.
The accused, identified as Abdul Majid Mir, son of Abdul Rahim Mir and a resident of Lishtiyal, Kupwara, was taken into custody in connection with FIR No. 10/2025. Officials said Mir lured complainants by claiming he could secure them government jobs and land at SDA Colony, Bemina, Srinagar, in return for large sums of money.
Investigators found that Mir had issued forged appointment letters purportedly from the Airport Authority of India and fake land allotment documents allegedly from the Srinagar Development Authority. The probe confirmed serious acts of impersonation and fraud.
On the basis of evidence, police charged Mir under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code. He was presented before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Srinagar, which remanded him to five days’ police custody for further investigation.
The Crime Branch urged the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant against similar fraudulent schemes, reiterating its commitment to bringing economic offenders to justice.
