Srinagar

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and parliamentary candidate for Anantnag constituency Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said that government of India wants to turn Kashmir into an open-air prison and convert the jails into Guantanamo.

Mehbooba, who also served as chief minister of J&K was reacting to a protest by the families of inmates lodged in Srinagar central jail. The protesting family members and relatives said that prisoners are not safe inside the central jail Srinagar and using force to quell the protests is a clear violation.

“Prisoners are entitled to fundamental human rights & using brute force to quell protests is a clear violation. Pertinent to mention that inmates protested after alleged desecration of Quran. GoI wants to turn Kashmir into an open air prison & convert actual jails into Guantanamo,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Earlier on April 05, two inmates were reportedly injured and at least three barracks and a building suffered damages amid a number of “gas cylinder blasts” inside Srinagar’s fortified central jail following massive protests by prison inmates.
