SRINAGAR: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the schedule for the house listing phase of Census 2027, fixing the nationwide exercise between April 1 and September 30, 2026, covering all States and Union Territories.
According to a notification issued by the Office of the Registrar General of India, the house listing operation will be carried out for 30 days in each State and Union Territory. The exact dates will be finalised separately by individual States and UTs within the prescribed window.
Issued under the Census Act, 1948, and the Census Rules, 1990, the notification supersedes an earlier order dated January 7, 2020, while protecting steps already undertaken under the previous directive.
The Centre has also introduced a self-enumeration option for the upcoming Census. Officials said this facility will be available for 15 days prior to the start of the door-to-door house listing exercise.
The house listing phase is a crucial preparatory step of the Census, involving the collection of information on buildings, households and basic civic amenities, forming the foundation for the population enumeration that will follow.
