SRINAGAR: The Centre has standardised the official names of 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh for inclusion in Survey of India maps, the Ministry of Home Affairs said on Thursday.
The exercise was undertaken in consultation with the Ladakh administration and is intended to ensure consistency in the identification and recording of the locations in official maps and government records, the ministry said, as reported by the Times of India.
The identified features span several categories, including peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes, water bodies and land areas.
Among the peaks included in the list are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.
Karun Pir, Drak Karpo and Jolmori have been classified as mountains, while Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass have been designated as passes. Parpik and Skamri have been recorded as glaciers.
The list also includes Shkorga Valley and Yangpa River, along with several land areas identified as Gogra, Dehra Compass, Brangsa, Kuksel, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa.
Guru Rinpoche has been identified as a lake, while Hot Spring has been classified as a water body.
The standardisation forms part of the maintenance of official cartographic records, with the stated objective of ensuring uniformity in geographical names across government maps and records.
Some of the identified locations, including Gogra and Hot Spring, are strategically significant and were among the areas associated with the India-China border tensions in eastern Ladakh.
The Survey of India is India’s national mapping agency and is responsible for surveying, mapping and preparing official maps of the country. The inclusion of the 28 features in its records will provide standardised references for their names and locations.
