Soon after the news of an encounter spread, the locals mostly youth took to the streets and clashed with the government forces in Heff Shirmal area of Shopian district in south Kashmir.

Reports said that the residents of the area came out of their house and tried to march towards the gun fight site, the residents pelted the government forces with stones and forces retaliated by firing teargas smoke shells. However, there were no reports of any damage during the clashes.

Earlier, two militants were killed during an ongoing gunfight after a joint team of army’s 44RR, 23Para and SOG launched cordon and search operation in Heff Shirmal after having credible input about the presence of some militants in the area.

As the forces intensified the searches, the militants opened fire on them triggering off a gunfight, they said.

An official said that two militants were killed in a gunfight so far. “Their identities and affiliations are being ascertained,” he added. The authorities have snapped mobile Internet service in the area. When reports last came in the intermittent exchange of firing was going on.
