Clashes erupted between college students and police in Ganderbal on Wednesday when  some college students alleged that some police officials misbehaved with them.

An eyewitness said, “Clashes broke out when students were marching towards degree college, Tawheed chowk and police didn’t allow them to proceed. Following which students resorted to stone pelting triggering clashes between students and police.”

Eyewitnesses also said that police used teargas shelling to disperse the protesters.

Refuting student claims of misbehavior , SSP Ganderbal Imtiaz Ismail Parray told Kashmir Life over phone,  an overloaded passenger bus in which some college students were also travelling was challened by policemen for violating traffic rules in Kheer Bawani. But  college students in the bus argued with the policemen and were asking them not to challan the bus.

“Students went to their degree college in Ganderbal, where they forcefully closed down the college and then blocked the main road around 10.30am. When police reached the spot and dispersed  crowd, students went to their college and damaged college property,” SSP said.

Meanwhile, SSP confirmed that around a dozen policemen including SHO Ganderbal received minor injuries during the incident.
