SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the killing of a civilian in Ganderbal must not be concealed and that the truth should be placed before the public, as a time-bound magisterial inquiry proceeds into the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said the inquiry was ordered by the Lieutenant Governor following a request from the elected government and would be completed within a week, after which the findings would be made public.
He stressed that incidents of this nature must be handled transparently. “Where such incidents happen, they should not be concealed and truth should be kept before the public,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said that law and order and security powers are not under the elected government, noting that these responsibilities lie outside its control.
The remarks come after a civilian was killed in an encounter in Ganderbal. The Army said the deceased was a militant, while the family contested the claim, stating that he was innocent.
No official findings have been released so far, and the inquiry is underway. [KNT]
