SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday inaugurated the Rotary Satellite Club-Kashmir Valley, marking the expansion of Rotary International’s community-service activities into the Valley.
The new club has been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dahanu under Rotary International District 3141, which covers Mumbai and comprises more than 100 member clubs.
Welcoming the initiative, Omar said the new Rotary platform could play an important role in addressing local needs and contributing to social development in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister highlighted Rotary’s long-standing work in areas including healthcare, education, sanitation, environmental protection and community development, and encouraged the newly installed board to identify issues at the grassroots level and undertake sustainable projects in coordination with government departments and institutions.
Omar also stressed the need to support Kashmiri artisans and preserve the region’s traditional handicrafts through skill development, innovation, improved market access and livelihood opportunities.
He said Rotary could contribute to the tourism and hospitality sectors as well by promoting professional training, youth engagement and initiatives aimed at encouraging responsible tourism.
Referring to Rotary International’s theme, “Create Lasting Impact”, the Chief Minister said sustained and community-oriented service could help create long-term social benefits.
He also congratulated individuals who were recognised for their contributions to tourism, art, hospitality and public service in Jammu and Kashmir and extended his best wishes to the Rotary Satellite Club-Kashmir Valley.
Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLAs Tanvir Sadiq and Salman Ali Sagar, District Governor Rotary Club of Dahanu Rajan Dua, District Governor Rotary District 3070 Anil Singhal, Regal President Tanveer Shah and Director Mushtaq Group of Hotels Dr Mushtaq Chaya were present on the occasion.
The programme also witnessed the installation of the Regal Board of Directors and the secretariat.
The Chief Minister also presented awards to individuals in recognition of their services to society.
