SRINAGAR: Amid widespread devastation caused by incessant rainfall, flash floods and landslides in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has convened a high-level meeting on Sunday evening to assess the evolving weather situation and review the government’s preparedness and response.
According to an official order issued by the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (DMRRR), the meeting will be held at 6:00 pm in the Second Floor Civil Secretariat, Jammu.
The meeting has been called to review the situation arising from the prevailing adverse weather conditions and evaluate the preparedness of various departments to deal with the crisis.
A large number of senior ministers and top civil and police officials have been directed to attend. These include Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, ministers in charge of Health, Education, Jal Shakti, Tribal Affairs, Agriculture, Food and Consumer Affairs, and Social Welfare, besides the Chief Secretary and Financial Commissioners of key departments.
The Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Home), Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir, Inspector General of Police (Traffic), Deputy Commissioners, Chief Engineers of Irrigation and Flood Control, representatives of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), NHIDCL, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Project Sampark, Beacon, and senior officials from disaster management and infrastructure agencies have also been asked to participate.
The order directs the Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir to make a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the preparations undertaken, the prevailing weather situation and the measures taken by the administration to mitigate the impact of the ongoing rains.
Officials stationed outside Jammu have been instructed to join the meeting virtually from the designated meeting hall at the Civil Secretariat or from their respective offices.
The review comes as heavy rainfall has caused extensive damage in several districts, particularly Rajouri and Poonch, where flash floods and landslides have claimed lives, damaged roads, bridges and houses, and disrupted normal life. The government is expected to review rescue operations, restoration of connectivity, relief measures and preparedness for any further weather-related emergencies.
