SRINAGAR: The death toll from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday has risen to 132, while more than 570 people have been injured, according to the latest information provided.
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake was centred near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco region, about 400 kilometres west of Bogota.
The powerful tremor damaged hundreds of buildings and left several people trapped beneath debris. Rescue teams, assisted by local residents, continued searching through collapsed structures for survivors.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella declared an emergency to facilitate the release of funds for relief and recovery efforts. He said the government would provide all possible assistance to people affected by the disaster.
More than 20 municipalities have reportedly been affected, with damage reported in Pereira, Quibdo, Cali and Manizales.
The earthquake was also felt in neighbouring Ecuador and Panama, although no major damage was reported in either country.
Authorities have warned of possible aftershocks and continued rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
Officials described the earthquake as the most powerful to hit Colombia in the past decade.
