SRINAGAR: S Mukhtar who used to write off beat columns and short stories is no more. He died at his brother’s residence at HMT, family sources said.

His actual name was Molvi Mukhtar Ahmad Shah but he took S Mukhtar as his pen name and was mostly known as that. Mukhtar was born in 1942. A talented science student who did His B Sc in first class, he was subsequently selected for MBBS. However, owing to some health issues at a young age, he did not join the medical school.

He was a knowledgeable and well-read person and wrote for a few local newspapers, especially the Kashmir Times where he used to write a regular column about offbeat subjects.

A family source said he has written some books too. One of them was 20 Short Stories that was published by the Institute of Objective Studies.

An orator and a good academician, one family member said he was also teaching in a Tibya College.

S Mukhtar used to live in Balgarden. He later shifted to HMT where he was living with his brother. Mukhtar has not married as a matter of choice.
