A complete shutdown was observed on Saturday throughout the valley on the occasion of Republic Day. Hurriyat leaders had called for the shutter down strike.

All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices remained closed. The public and private transport was off from the roads. Reports of complete shutdown reached from all the district headquarters of the valley.

Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani had earlier said that India has no moral right to celebrate its Republic Day in Kashmir. He had stressed upon people to observe 26th January as ‘black day’.

Kashmiris suspend their day to day business and prefer to remain indoors on the occasions of 15th August and 26th January, since more than two decades when India celebrates its Independence day and Republic Day.

In an attempt to avert any untoward situation, forces personnel were deployed at vital places across the city.
