Congress announced on Tuesday that it plans to celebrate the participations of Panchs and Sarpanchs for the legislative assembly elections. This was despite the fact that Congress voters in Ladakh, Kathua and at a number of places in Jammu deliberately skipped polling the second vote. Every panch and sarpanch had two votes for two candidates.

“The Sarpanchs and Panchs deserve heartfelt greetings  for their spectacular success in showing their solidarity for a noble cause of strengthening the Panchayat system and ensuring  for future that the democracy will get enormously strengthened at the grass-roots,” a statement issued by the party said. They have also reiterated their resolve that the process of development will also trickle down to the grass-roots in a meaningful way.

The party said 93% participation of Sarpanchs and Panchs in a free and fair election for the four seats in the legislative Council must be a record in India and for the people of the J&K State  it is a moment in time to feel proud.

“On this occasion, I reiterated the commitment of the J&K  Pradesh Congress Committee to take measures to empower Panchayat system at all levels and ensure grant of honorarium  to Sarpanchs and Panchs with insurance cover at the cost of the J&K Government,” the statement quoting Prof Soz said. “I also take this occasion to declare that J&K Pradesh Congress Committee will celebrate  a thanks giving event  both at Srinagar and Jammu  soon after the result will be available.”
