While presiding over  a thanks giving ceremony at Congress party HQ Srinagar, PCC president Saifuddin Soz on Saturday reassured  sarpanchs and panchs that the coalition will full fill its commitment to empower them and provide them honorarium  and insurance cover.

“This victory is also for strengthening democratic process through the instrument of Panchayats as also making it possible for participation of common man direct in the developmental process at grass roots level,” Soz said.

Panchs and Sarpanchs which are more than 34000 across the state, at one point of time, faced threats from different militant outfits. A few of them were killed and a number of them survived injured. This led to a series of resignations but these were not accepted by the government.

Soz also announced that a Panchayat Conferences will be held in Kashmir and Jammu Provinces very soon in which Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omer Abdullah and Mohan Prakash will be invited.

Addressing a similar gathering during the day in Jammu, Soz described the clean sweep over four LC seats as a marvelous victory in all three regions of the state. Soz reiterated the commitment of his party that the coalition will empower Panchayats by incorporating the necessary provisions of 73rd Amendment, wherever required, through discussion, dialogue and consensus. He also referred to the issue of honorarium and said that same has been taken up with Union Minister of Rural Development and Panchayats by him as well as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
