A Kashmiri woman arrested for peddling charas has two minor kids in state run Mankhurd home since August, Mumbai newspaper DNA reported. It said the prosecution faced heat for not restoring the two kids to her family.

Details revealed that in August 2016, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested a Kashmir resident Mehbooba Alam Dhar within seconds she alighted from a train at Borivali station allegedly carrying 40 kilograms of charas. Another woman Mehroon was also arrested. At the time of arrest, she had her two minor kids, aged nine and 12 years, with her.

As the NCB took the two women into custody, the two kids were sent to the children’s home in Mankhurd. Their mother, however, had requested the officers to hand over her kids to her family members, either to her nephew or her father-in-law, who would take the kids back to Kashmir. Officials, however, send them to the Home.

Now the woman’s lawyer has told the Court that NCB was using her children as ‘bait to trap’ her husband who is also an absconding accused in the case. The court has reportedly flayed NCB for acting ‘harshly’ against the kids, who had nothing to do with the intercepted contraband.

When the defence Ayaz Khan moved an application for releasing the two kids, the prosecution, according to the newspaper, has opposed it on the grounds that the children, as per law, can only be handed over to their father.

After the court heard arguments from two sides, the court finally consulted the kids and they were ordered to be released immediately.
