SRINAGAR

In the backdrop of attacks on prisoners in jails, the CPI (M) chairman Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and PDF chairman Hakim Mohammad Yasin today raised their concern over the murderous assaults. “The assaults on prisoners inside jails across the border which unfortunately started with an inhuman and brutal attack on Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail is strongly condemnable. The episode in Pakistan witnessed an immediate reaction in a Jammu jail where a Pakistani prisoner Sonaullah faced a barbaric assault leaving him in a critical situation. Both the attacks are barbaric, inhuman and not acceptable to any civilized society”, reads a statement.

“These unfortunate attacks have put the lives of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in different jails outside the State in peril. We have serious apprehensions over their safety as there is a possibility that they could meet the same fate. The government of Jammu and Kashmir must understand its responsibility and intervene to ensure their safety and security”, added the statement.

Both leaders have urged upon the government of India as well as the government of Pakistan to think seriously on the issue and ensure safety, security and humane treatment of Indian and Pakistani prisoners in each other’s jails. “The governments across the border must carry out an impartial investigation into the horrific attacks on Sarbjit and Sonaullah and ensure that those responsible are promptly prosecuted in fair trials including prison staff if the evidence shows their negligence may have helped facilitate the brutal assaults.”

They further said that the safety and security of prisoners in custody lies with the jail authorities and the necessary action should be taken in this regard. The Pakistani prisoner who was attacked in Kotebalwal jail must receive the best medical treatment.
