CPI (M) State Secretary Ghulam Nabi Malik on Sunday expressed deep concern over the huge damage caused to the residential houses and orchards in Kashmir valley due to Windstorm and untimely rainfall.

In a statement issued here, Malik said that the losses suffered by the orchardists in Kashmir are massive and that the south Kashmir region especially Kokernag, Shangus, Verinag, Qazigund, Tral remained worst affected areas wherein the damage caused to the residential houses are hundreds in number.

He said that the fruit growers have been bearing the brunt of untimely rainfalls and windstorm in the valley since past several years and that the recent heavy windstorms have only dashed the hopes of the harvest for the orchardists. He maintained that the south Kashmir has become the worst sufferers of this natural calamity.

He urged the government to take immediate measures to compensate the losses suffered by the people and demanded that expert team be deputed to South Kashmir to assess the losses caused by the windstorm to residential houses and orchards to provide compensation to the affectees at the earliest.

Malik said that Crop Insurance Scheme was the only way to come to the rescue of farmers and growers of the state especially Valley at the times of natural calamities and urged the govt. not to make any further delay in its implementation.
