SRINAGAR: In light of recent reports highlighting a surge in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children in China, health authorities have issued a comprehensive public advisory to address concerns and promote awareness.

The World Health Organization’s statement on the matter underscores the need to understand the causes behind the increase in respiratory ailments, attributing them to well-known factors such as Influenza, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and SARS-CoV-2.

Seasonal flu, a communicable disease transmitted through respiratory droplets, manifests with symptoms including fever, chills, malaise, loss of appetite, myalgia, nausea, sneezing, and a dry cough. This self-limiting ailment typically lasts 5-7 days, posing a higher risk to vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and those on long-term medications, particularly steroids, who may require hospitalization.

Key Guidelines for Prevention and Control

To curb the spread of respiratory illnesses, health authorities advise the public to adhere to crucial measures:

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a handkerchief or tissue.

Wash hands regularly with soap and water.

Avoid unnecessary touching of eyes, nose, or mouth.

Wear face masks in crowded places.

Maintain a safe distance from individuals exhibiting flu symptoms.

Prioritize sufficient sleep, physical activity, and stress management.

Stay hydrated and consume nutritious food.

Refrain from spitting in public.

Limit travel to areas with a high incidence of influenza and respiratory illnesses.

Individuals suspecting influenza or flu-like symptoms are advised to visit the nearest Government Health Care Centre if symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) occur.

Report worsening symptoms to the nearest Government Health facility.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, malaise, loss of appetite, body aches, nausea, sneezing, and prolonged dry cough should seek medical attention promptly.

High-risk populations may experience symptoms for up to 3 weeks.
