Yoga cukThe Directorate of Students Welfare (DSW) Central University of Kashmir (CUK) in association with Government College of Physical Education (GCPE), Ganderbal celebrated International Yoga Day at varsity’s Nowgam-I academic block on Tuesday.

The student representatives of both the institutions and some faculty members of CUK performed different Yoga Asnas shown by the trainer and Assistant Professor GCPE, Irfan Hussain.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mehraj ud Din Mir, Registrar, Prof M Afzal Zargar, Chief Warden, Dr Farooq Ahmad Shah, DSW Director, Dr Fayaz A Nikka and Assistant Professor, (GCPE), Showkat Hussain were among others present on the occasion.

Addressing the participants, Prof Mehraj ud Din, said that performing Yoga helps in rejuvenating the mind and the body. “Without physical exercise, an individual can’t have sound body and mind,” Prof Mehraj ud Din said after witnessing the Yoga Asnas performed by the students. He said that physical exercise was must for the overall development of human beings. The Vice-Chancellor said that the varsity was contemplating to establish a full-fledged Yoga centre in near future.

He added that the varsity in collaboration with GCPE will hold more such programmes and other activities related to physical development of individuals in future for the benefit of the students and staff of CUK.

Registrar, Prof M Afzal Zargar while speaking on the occasion also highlighted the advantages of performing Yoga. He underscored the need of performing physical exercises for maintaining good health.

DSW Director, Dr Fayaz A Nikka in his address discussed threadbare the importance of Yoga in strengthening the physical and mental capacities and capabilities of the human beings.

Assistant Professor, (GCPE), Showkat Hussain, later gave a detailed presentation on “Role of Yoga Towards Health.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Tourism Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organized two lectures, delivered by Ex-Director General Tourism, Muhammad Saleem Beg and Director Floriculture, Talat Parvaiz to the students, at Nowgam-I academic block of the varsity on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

Saleem Beg spoke on the topic “Heritage in Kashmir Valley and its Tourism potential: Definitions and Prospectus”, in which he highlighted the importance of heritage in Kashmir and job prospectus of MTTM students in the concerned field. He also showcased the work done by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir in restoration and preservation of Kashmir heritage.

Talat Parvaiz delivered a lecture on “Emerging Trends in Tourism”, in which he highlighted the diverse potential of tourism in Kashmir. He sensitized the students towards emerging entrepreneurial opportunities in tourism. Talat had an interaction with the students about the tourism policy and its implementation at national level.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mehraj ud Din Mir appreciated the endeavour of the department in conducting the extension lectures. He said that entrepreneurship in tourism has a tremendous potential in Valley and asked the students to become job creators rather than job seekers.

Head Department of Tourism, Prof Syed Fayaz during these lectures highlighted the contribution of the guests in the promotion of tourism industry in Kashmir.

The event was coordinated and presided by the Departmental Training and Placement Coordinator, Assistant Professor Ashaq Hussain Najar.
