A Cycle rally with the theme “Building Safe India for Women” was flagged off by Inspector General of police Kashmir Zone, A G Mir, Saturday morning from Kashmir University, Srinagar. The rally will traverse through five states starting from Srinagar and will culminate at New Delhi covering about 1100 kms.

On the flagging off ceremony Registrar University of Kashmir, Professor Zaffar Reshi, Programme Officer, NSS Jamia Milia Islamia New Delhi Dr Abid Husain and Proctor Kashmir University Dr Naseer Iqbal were present.

Speaking on the occasion the IGP Kashmir said that since women constitute 50 percent of our population, it is important to have women participation in each and every field of life. The programme of organizing a cycle rally by Jamia Mila for women empowerment and building a safe India for women is a welcome gesture. What makes this rally special is good number of girls participating in the long rally from Srinagar to New Delhi, he added.

He further said that because of such kind of events more and more awareness regarding the women empowerment is getting spread adding that the said that rally will be well received by the people and will attract their attention.

The IGP said that students both male and female have bring in attitudinal change. We have been living in a patriarchal society for thousands of years now. Times are changing, and we have to get out of this mindset. We have to make a society not led by the men only but by both men and women.

The Cycle Rally is being organized by Jamia Millia Islamia on the theme of safety, security for women and their empowerment will see 42 participants including support staff and medical team carry the flame of women empowerment. The participants will interact with people along the route of the rally to share the modern vision of women empowerment and gender equalities, besides, getting a feel of the life and vision for better India from them.

Jamia Millia has been organizing Cycle rallies every year to carry forward Important social messages to the masses which include “Dillon Ko Jodo” from Pushkar to Delhi in 2010, “Aman Ka Karwan” from Wagah border to Delhi in 2011 and “Save Water; Save Earth“ from Narkanda in HP to Delhi in 2012.

This year the rally is coming up to light the flame of women empowerment and security from Srinagar to Delhi. The rally will cover a distance of approx. 1100 kms and will pass through the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Union Territory of Chandigarh.

These students representing various regions of the country, accompanied by faculty members and a back up team shall participate in this 18 days rally.

The objectives of the rally is to generate awareness about women empowerment and security, to provide an opportunity to the students to understand the flora and fauna of the different regions of India, to expose the students to various challenges and thus develop the skills to overcome difficult situations in life and to develop their character and personality, to carry forward the message of “Girls Education : Gender Equality” and to promote Peace and National Integration among youth of the country.
