SRINAGAR: Casual and daily-wage workers from various government departments staged a protest in Srinagar on Tuesday, seeking higher wages and regularisation of their services during the ongoing session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
The demonstration was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Casual/Daily Wagers Forum and led by its president, Sajad Ahmed Parray.
The workers said their demands had remained pending for a prolonged period and called on the government to take concrete measures to resolve issues concerning their wages and service regularisation.
The protest comes as the Legislative Assembly is taking up matters related to temporary and daily-wage employees. The government has informed the House that it is examining a uniform framework for the regularisation of temporary workers, including daily-rated workers, casual and seasonal labourers, and other contractual and need-based employees.
According to the government, a committee constituted in March 2025 is examining the humanitarian, legal and financial aspects of regularising such workers.
The government has also said consultations with the departments concerned are required before a final policy decision can be taken.
The protesting workers urged the government to expedite the process and provide relief on their long-pending demands, particularly wage enhancement and regularisation.
