Doctors Association Kashmir has condemned “attack” on Dr Firdous Ahmad Sheikh at Handwara hospital.

“The doctor was severely beaten by few goons at Handwara hospital where he was attending to his professional duties. The doctor had lodged an FIR against the said incident but was forced and pressurised to take it back as his two brothers where held by police so that the doctor is made to take his fir back,” Dr Mir Mushtaq: DAK spokesman said in a statement.

“Doctors at Handwara hospital today held protest against this barbaric act. The protest was led by DR G. M Mir, President Doctors Association Kashmir,” he said, adding, “We have repeatedly been asking government to bring an ordinance against violence on doctors but our repeated pleas have gone to deaf ears. Government probably is waiting for some big mishap to take place, then only they will probably act.”

“We appeal to the Director General of police and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to direct district administration Handwara to take strict action against the culprits failing which we will be forced to close down Handwara hospital for routine work,” he said.

DAK said that in another incident Dr Ijtiba Shafi was today assaulted by police at Qamarwari Chowk, Srinagar. “We want action to be taken in both these incidents,” he said
