A complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama and adjacent hamlet on ninth consecutive day not allowing the youth of Pulwama to erect “Martyrs Memorial” at Shaheed Park.

All the business establishments and shops were closed while as traffic remained off the roads, reports said.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that on Friday forces including local police and Para military Central Reserve Police Force were deployed in strength to thwart possible post Friday protests. Reports said that shortly after Friday prayers, groups of youth pelted stones on the deployed forces at Prichu. Police burst tear smoke shells to disperse them. The clashes between police and youth continued for hours.

A complete shutdown was also observed in the adjacent hamlets of the district including Tahab, Naira, Rohmu, Karimabad and Penglina.

“The strike would continue till we are not allowed to erect the memorial board at Shaheed Park,” some youth from Pulwama said.
