Lashing out government for continuous ban on daily English newspaper, Kashmir Reader, Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday termed it as “sheer dictatorship”.

Kashmir Reader, a daily English newspaper published from Srinagar, was banned from publication by Srinagar district magistrate from October 03. It first hit market on May 15, 2012.

“Continuous ban on @Kashmir_Reader is sheer dictatorship towards a newspaper 4 (for) reflecting sentiments & aspirations of people & reporting facts,” tech savvy Mirwaiz Umar, who remains under arrest since July 08 evening, wrote on micro-blogging networking site, Twitter.

On October 02, 2016 evening, some five cops handed over the ban order to Kashmir Reader editor asking its printer and publisher to cease the publication forth with. “The content published by Kashmir Reader can incite violence,” a part of ban order reads. However, the charge has been rejected by it editor.

“We were not even given copy of dossier,” Kashmir Reader editor, Hilal Mir said, “government has invoked laws but we are yet to be told for what reasons.”

It is 33rd consecutive day that the newspaper did not hit market. At least sixty employees, both editorial and non-editorial, are sitting home. The newspaper is being promoted by publishers of erstwhile popular magazine, Conveyor.

The ban on the newspaper evoked worldwide condemnation and working Journalists of Kashmir have been continuously holding protests against the extreme step taken by any government in last three decades demanding withdrawal of the same.
