In what could be new low in diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan, the nuclear armed South Asian neighbours are reportedly recalling their High Commissioners for a ‘certain time period’.

The latest diplomatic debacle was triggered between India and Pakistan after the cover of certain officials posted in each other’s capitals was revealed by the two sides through media leaks.

On Thursday, Pakistan officially named eight Indian diplomats working in Islamabad as “under-cover agents”.

Last week, Delhi had detained one Pakistan embassy staffer who was later forced out of India.

A news report published by The Express Tribune said that the two sides may go for ‘scaling down’ of the strength of diplomatic staff in each other’s country.

The latest diplomatic tensions were triggered when police last week detained Mehmood Akhtar, a staff member of Pakistan’s High Commission in New Deli for questioning over espionage charges was later expelled from India. He was working as a visa officer at the Pakistani High Commission.

The news report said that “India using a statement Delhi police extracted from Akhtar through coercive means, implicated other Pakistani staffers”.

Pakistan later recalled these six officers as well who reached Lahore last Wednesday.
