Keeping in view the “prevailing situation” amid massive civil uprising in Kashmir and upcoming August 15 day, District Magistrate Kishtwar on Wednesday issued orders with regard to deposition of all the licensed weapons in next five days i.e. on or before 15th of August 2016.

As per the details available with Kashmir Life, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar who is also having the power of District Magistrate Kishtwar issued an order on 10-08-2016 directing SSP Kishtwar and Station House Officers/In Charge Police Posts concerned of Kishtwar district to ensure that all the licensed weapon holders falling within their jurisdiction will deposit their licensed weapons at nearest police stations after availing proper receipt against the deposited weapons.

The order from District Magistrate Kishtwar comes in wake of aftermath of police and intelligence agencies report warning of possible “threat” of display of licensed weapons or use of such weapons to destabilize peace and tranquillity in the area at the time when Kashmir region is already facing a major crisis.

When contacted, a senior police officer confirmed to Kashmir Life that District Magistrate Kishtwar has issued the order directing all the licensed weapon holders to deposit the weapons at police station.

“After District Magistrate Kishtwar passed the order and directions to police, special cells have been created at police stations wherein the licensed weapon holders will deposit their weapons,” he said.

In a question regarding if any person refuses to deposit the weapon, the police official said that legal action as warranted under law will be initiated against such licensed weaponry holders which also include cancelation of the license of the weapon.
