Member of Parliament and senior PDP leader, Tariq Hameed Karra on Tuesday said that in his opinion Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement after meeting the leaders of opposition from Jammu and Kashmir was “tantamount to rubbing salt” on the wounds of Kashmiris.

In a statement issued to KNS, Karra said, “after brutally killing around 65 people, maiming thousands and blinding around a hundred, Prime Minister Modi has woken up to realise that development alone is no solution to the current unrest. It is merely a mockery and jugglery of words for which PM Modi is very popular.”

He said that the record of last 45 days about the intent of both Union as well as the state governments stands testimony to the fact that the “only reason for using disproportionate force, brutal killings, caging the people by way of continuing curfew was to suppress the political discontent and administrative failures by way of force”.

“Prime Minister should have given a roadmap for solving this political problem rather than making it conditional,” he said.

“By doing so,” Karra said, “PM is inviting rejection so that he could beat the drum world over about it.”

“It would have been prudent and mainly on the part of the Prime Minister if he would have extended an invitation for an out of the box solution,” Karra said.

“Instead of continuing a battle against Kashmiris, he should have first initiated some confidence building measures by repealing draconian laws, punishing the guilty for using disproportionate and ruthless force on unarmed protesters,” Karra added.

“By using ruthless force and brutality Union government and the state government can maim the people but can never ever win them over,” he said.

Karra further said till now the Government of India has not bothered to show any ‘Insaaniyat’ to put an end to the use of lethal pellet guns which clearly indicates that Modi’s statement on Kashmir is “mere rhetoric’s and lip service sans action on the ground”.
