Mirwaiz Umar Farooq being arrested on way to Eidgah on August 26, 2016.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference (m) on Saturday strongly condemned the arrest and detention of its chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who has been lodged at sub-jail in Cheshma Shahi Srinagar.

“The illegal house arrest for the past 49 days and the arbitrary detention of the Mirwaiz shows the government’s frustration and failure in dealing with the people’s revolt,” the APHC-m spokesperson said this evening.

“Illegally caging, confining and censoring the leadership is the standard response of the infamous regime as well as its predecessors to prevent them from leading the people and letting the truth of Kashmir be known,” the spokesperson said adding, “such undemocratic and authoritarian measures will not deter Mirwaiz and cadres of APHC-m from representing and advocating the will and aspirations of people and their sacred struggle for which the whole nation is tremendously sacrificing and facing collective torture.”

The spokesperson added that Mirwaiz’s “commitment” to the movement is a “proud legacy” he has “inherited” from his forefathers who made “sacrifices and suffered hardships in the form of exiles, incarcerations, torture and harassment at the hands of the powers that be but always led and supported the peoples movement for achievement of justice and their basic political Right of Self Determination”.

Expressing deep sorrow and grief at the “murder” on young Shakeel Ahmed Ganai of Rajpora Pulwama by the “barbaric forces” yesterday and the drowning of Shahnawaz Khan of Sangam Islamabad who died when the forces were chasing him and he jumped into water to save himself, the APHC-m spokesperson strongly denounced these “brutalities” and said, “India is systematically carrying out target killing of our youth , Under the pretext of so-called ‘controlling the violent mobs’ by shooting to kill or forcing them to flee with fatal consequences.”

The spokesperson said, “the  inhuman excesses committed by the forces in Hanjivera Pattan beating and injuring inmates, ransacking homes and destroying belongings is shameful and higher deplorable. People will never be brought into submission by such atrocities.”
