SRINAGAR

Civil liberty activist Khurram Parvez has been arrested, family members said.

The arrest came within hours after Khurram landed in Srinagar after being denied to fly to Geneva for the ongoing session of UNHRC.

Family members told reporters that within minutes after he reported home, he got a call from police seeking his presence. He told them he will come on Friday. But late evening, a police party reported to his residence and took him along.

Khurram heads the J&K Coalition of Civil Society that has issued a series of reports on the state of human rights in Kashmir.

He was part of the team that was invited to the UNHRC but Delhi disallowed him from taking the Geneva flight. Within less than 20 hours of the denial to fly abroad, Khurram was arrested in Srinagar.

It was not immediately known if Khurram’s arrest is formal one. Nobody in the state government or the police offered any idea. But family sources said he is being detained in the police station Kothibagh.

“He has been detained, without formal arrest or notifications, and in violation of his rights to information, and legal counsel,” a spokesperson of the Coalition was quoted saying. “He has not been provided with any written document, court order or the reasons for his detention.”

UNHRC has remained highly critical of the situation in Kashmir and has been seeking access to investigate the state of human rights. Unlike Islamabad, Delhi has not permitted it, so far.
