Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) chief and MLA Langate Er Rashid Wednesday strongly condemned the harassment of Dr Naeem Geelani by state agencies only for the reason that he happens to be son of Hurriyat Conference (g) Chairperson Syed Ali Geelani.

Rashid said that noted human rights defender Khurram Parvez’s arrest has yet again proved that for India “whosoever speaks about truth or exposing Indian atrocities is an anti-national and deserves the worst”.

“Subjecting Dr Naeem to mental torture will not help, as India needs to understand that the uprising on streets which has been there since 1947 in one form or the other, is not creation or handiwork of an individual, party or amalgam but a befitting reply to India’s history of broken promises,” Rashid said in a statement issued this evening.

On an occasion when UN General Assembly is in session, Rashid said Government of India should have “introspected” on its “misdeeds and taken initiatives to improve its record on enormous and grave human rights violations, but it preferred to display more arrogance by arresting human rights activist Khurram Parvez without any specific allegation”.

“His arrest has proved that for Indian State any Kashmiri, even if he is a Journalist, Trade Union Leader, Student, Human Rights Activist, a democratically elected law maker or a peaceful kid or elderly person protesting on streets, is an enemy’s agent and anti-national if he speaks about political and human rights of the suppressed and oppressed people of J&K,” Rashid observed.

He also condemned imposing sedition charges against Tauseef Ahmad Bhat of Sopore and expelling Mudasir Yousuf of Srinagar from AMU just for expressing their views on social media.

“The treatment the two Kashmiri students have exposed Rajnath Singh’s helpline gimmick to help Kashmiris and thus proving that Indians themselves believe Kashmiris can’t ever be Indians,” he added.
