Kashmir’s vocal lawmaker Engineer Rashid was stopped by the police at Jawahar Tunnel in Qazigund. He was on his way to Chenab Valley where he was invited for a wedding, Rashid told Kashmir Life.

Engineer, who represents Langate constituency for the second consecutive term had petitioned the High Court against the police decision of disallowing him to Chenab Valley, especially Kishtwar, the most communally sensitive township in the belt. He had also requested the court that he should not face any problems for extending his political activities in the region.

As the court sought a report from the Chief Secretary and the State Police Chief, the lawmaker personally pleaded his case and confronted the additional advocate general in the court of Mr Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir. He told the court that the government is not only preventing him from his political activities in the Jammu province but is even disallowing him from attending to weddings. He said last time Jammu police disallowed him from attending a marriage in Surnakot. It was in this background that he sought court orders to the state government that he be allowed to attend his colleague’s marriage in Kishtwar.

With court order in his pocket, when Rashid reached Jawahar Tunnel, he was stopped. He showed them the court order but the cops guarding the tunnel said that they have been directed by their boss against letting him go.

Threatening initiating contempt proceedings against the police, Rashid sat on the protest and may return back to Srinagar.
