Creating a scare in the belt, two gunmen shot at Fayaz Ahmad Bhaty at Kandizal, on the other side of Pampore. He died almost instantly.

Though police in Kakpora, in whose territorial jurisdiction the area falls, was not immediately contact, residents told Kashmir Life that Fayaz died almost instantly on the spot. He was driven to Pampore hospital where he was reported brought dead.

The assailants were two in number and had come on a motor-cycle. They used pistol and fired two shots, reports said.

Son of Abdul Gani Bhat, Fayaz was a local Sarpanch earlier. His party affiliations were not immediately known. He was around 27  years of age. He was Sarpanch till August, when his term completed.

However, a police source suggested that he was with the NC. He had not many details.

Yawar Masoodi, of the NC confirmed that Fayaz was with them till last assembly elections but later dissociated. He said he had joined BJP later.
