Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani strongly condemned the “autocratic and undemocratic” decision of government to ban prominent newspaper of Kashmir, Kashmir Reader’s publication.

“It is one of the darkest chapters in the history of the press in Jammu & Kashmir, but yet another indication of the Indian authorities taking off their masks of democracy, law and constitutionality thereby showing their true repressive nature,” Geelani said in a statement issued on Monday afternoon.

“It isn’t thus ironical that the stated ‘reason’ for shutting down this popular newspaper is ‘possible incitement to violence and disturbing peace’,” he said.

“The Indian state wants to enforce the peace of dead, through violence and repression, and anyone raising voice against that, reporting or writing against that is labelled a threat. This is, simply, state terrorism calling those who resist, violent or a threat to ‘peace’ or terrorists,” the All Parties Hurriyat Conference chief said.

He said that this “shameful and barbaric” act must be opposed and “I express my unflinching solidarity with Kashmir Reader.
