Member of Pakistan National Assembly and Special Envoy of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Kashmir, Mushahid Hussain said the recent escalation in Pak-India tensions could adversely “affect” the war against terrorism on Pakistan’s western borders.

Addressing Pakistani and Kashmiri Diaspora at a dinner held at Pakistan Embassy in Washington, DC on Wednesday, Mushahid Hussain, along with Dr Shazra (MNA) said the conflict between the two nuclear-armed rivals is not only detrimental to the stability of the region but also hinders the United States’ policies and objectives pertaining to the region.

The envoy apprised the community members about the current situation in Kashmir and “brutal human rights violations” by forces in the valley, Geo TV reported on Thursday.

He also briefed the audience about his meetings with think tanks and various officials of the US State Department “aimed at promoting awareness about the latest freedom movement in Kashmir”.

Senator Mushahid Hussain said, “the Kashmir dispute is not at all about territory but about giving innocent Kashmiris their due rights who are suffering at the hands of oppressive Indian forces.” “The situation has become worse following the extra-judicial killing of a young Kashmiri freedom fighter Burhan Wani on July 8 2016 which infused new vigour among the Kashmiri youth.”

Hussain called upon the US to mediate for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue and said that Pakistan is committed to highlighting the Kashmir dispute at international platforms.

Mushahid Hussain said he will meet President Obama’s security team at the White House on Friday where he will discuss the escalating Pak-India tensions and “atrocities in Kashmir”.
