Curfew remained in force in interior areas of Srinagar on Sunday while Kashmir is observing complete shutdown today.

Curfew has been imposed in five police station areas of Srinagar – Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal and Maharaj Gunj – as a precautionary measure, a police official told a wire news agency.

Although Lal Chowk and uptown areas witness some movement of private and government vehicles for past some days, however, today, there is complete shutdown with least vehicular movement.

The curbs have been lifted from two police station areas -Maisuma and Batamaloo, the official said.

On Saturday early morning, police and CRPF men fired tear gas shells on a funeral of 12-year-old school boy who was killed when pellets perforated his tinder body. Family of slain Junaid Ahmad said that he was targeted by men in uniform on last Friday afternoon. He was rushed to SKIMS Soura where he succumbed to his injuries around 2 AM during night of Oct 7th & 8th.

The situation in interior areas of the city remained tense after a day after Junaid’s death sparking fresh clashes between protesters and forces yesterday. Reports of shutdown were also received from other district headquarters today.

Kashmir is witnessing an uprising since July 09, 2016 when popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed by forces in Bemdoora area of Islamabad district on July 08, 2016 evening.

At least 94 civilians have been killed while over 15000 others have been injured in forces action.

Top resistance leadership remained jailed while over 7000 others, mostly youths, have been arrested by police over the past three months for pro-freedom protests. Over 450 persons have been booked under notorious Public Safety Act (PSA).
