National Conference Jammu Provincial President Devender Singh Rana while reacting to planned celebration of October 26 as “Victory Day” by the right wing Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in J&K said that it had a potential to “vitiate” the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

Then autocrat, Maharaja Hari Singh, has acceded to the Union of India on Oct 26, 1947 and soon after some hours, Indian army landed in Srinagar.

While speaking during a party convention meeting at NC Headquarter in Kishtwar on Wednesday, Rana, who is NC MLA from Nagrota, said, “BJP has failed to fulfil its promises made by them with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

“The (BJP) resolution was passed at the time when situation is not conducive in the state. If BJP will go ahead with its resolution, it will trigger a communal division that can vitiate the peace in the state of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Without naming BJP, NC’s Provincial President said that some forces are hell bent to divide the people on religious lines.

He condemned the RSS march that took place in Doda town few days back and demanded an inquiry into the matter.

“Who gives the permission to RSS to carry out march in Doda town at a time when situation is not conducive in the area,” he asked seeking probe in to it. “There is also a need to fix the responsibility on the officials who give permission for such events.”

He said that time has come for the people to remain firm in its traditionally old “secular credentials” of the society so that forces like RSS could be stopped in their mission which Rana said is to divide the people on religious lines.

He said that PM Modi is “trying to make J&K a battle ground to fulfil his election agenda for upcoming UP elections”. “I urge PM Modi not to make J&K a battle ground for upcoming UP elections – as any such initiative of RSS and BJP has the potential not only to engulf the state in fire of communal divide, but the nation as whole,” said Rana.

Rana said that National Conference believes that Jammu and Kashmir is “integral part of India”. “Instead of focusing on strengthening the bond between the people of J&K with rest of India, the BJP and RSS are talking about Baluchistan,” he said.

Slamming the coalition government, Rana said, “PDP and BJP has lost the public support and the same was clearly witnessed on the streets of Kashmir during last three months.”

“Both the parties sold dreams to the people on saffronization and green pastures; that too against each other, but later joined their hands for the sake of power,” he said.
