A Volleyball tourney for jail inmates was inaugurated on Sunday at Special Jail(Correctional Home) Pulwama by DC Pulwama Dr Syed Abid Rashid.

A police spokesperson in a statement said that the tournament has been organised in collaboration with District Youth Services and Sports and will be played for ten days.

“A total of  64 jail inmates in 8 teams are participating in the tournament. Reyaz Ahmed Superintendent of the jail said that the inmates are very enthusiastic about the tournament and are actively participating in all the activities meant for their welfare and recreation,” said the police spokesperson.

“On the Directions of DGP Prisons -Dilbag Singh, sports activities are regularly organised in all the jails of the State and have become a part of the daily routine of inmates. These activities form an important part of deradicalization programs in prisons and are designed to promote a healthy lifestyle, manage stress, develop social skills and team spirit apart from engaging the inmates positively,” he said.

“Many steps are being taken to keep radicalisation of inmates in check which include improving the basic facilities, developing the infrastructure in jails apart from positively engaging the inmates in educational, vocational and recreational activities,” said police spokesperson in a statement.
