SRINAGAR: In a shocking incident in which a newborn baby girl declared dead by the hospital was found alive many hours later, the Deputy Commissioner announced a probe. The hospital has placed two staffers under suspension already.

In a normal delivery, reports reaching from Ramban said a baby girl was born to Shameema Begum, wife of Basharat Ahmed Gujjar a resident of Gujjar Basti Bankoot near Banihal. The delivery took place at sub-district hospital Banihal. The hospital managers declared the infant dead and the family was asked to lay her to eternal rest.

“After waiting for almost two hours, the baby was taken and laid to rest in the graveyard at Hollan,” one of the family members was quoted saying in the video. Sometime later, the managers of the graveyard raised objections over the unauthorised burial. This angered the family and they exhumed the infant with the objective of reburying her in their ancestral graveyard, almost 4.5 km away. “It was during the exhumation that the baby cried shocking everybody.”

Reports said the baby was immediately shifted to GB Panth Hospital in Srinagar and the mother is doing well in the Banihal hospital.

After the issue was taken up with the hospital managers, two staffers have been put under suspension.

“I have already directed the CMO to constitute an enquiry,” Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Masrat ul Islam said. “I am not fully aware of the details but we are in the process of collecting every aspect of the incident.”
