Ruling PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has strongly defended his father’s statement about state elections and said that her party stands by all that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said.

In an interview to a TV channel, Mehbooba also said that Indian media does not understand Kashmir.

“Media in Delhi has overplayed remarks because they don’t understand Kashmir,” Mehbooba said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said that Pakistan and the separatists had allowed peaceful polls in the state.

The statement caused an early  controversy even National Conference working president Omar Abdullah demanded an apology from Mufti.

“My father is a man of peace he believes in the democratic process, Mehbooba said adding “there was less violence this time compared to the Lok Sabha polls.”

Mehbooba said, “if separatists and militants are stepping back from violence we should encourage them.”

“Armed forces were there in previous elections too but there was violence my father is not a war monger, don’t expect him to say ‘Bomb Pakistan’,” Mehbooba said.

She elaborated, “my father’s point is we need to engage Pakistan so they have a stake in peace in Jammu & Kashmir.”
