SRINAGAR: Delhi Police has withdrawn Jantar Mantar’s status as a designated venue for public demonstrations, directing protesters to three alternative locations in the national capital, according to an official standing order issued on 11 October.
The order, issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, designates Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi as alternative venues for public protests and demonstrations.
The decision follows recommendations by a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to identify suitable alternative locations for public assemblies. Delhi Police said a revised standard operating procedure governing demonstrations at the three designated sites would be issued separately.
The move changes the arrangements for public demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, a prominent protest site in central Delhi. It comes amid heightened security measures and increased police deployments across the capital following recent public calls and demonstrations centred on the location.
The revised procedures are expected to set out the arrangements governing protests at the newly designated venues. Further details of the implementation of the order were not provided in the information available.
