SRINAGAR: A massive fire has literally decimated part of a Kupwara village, late last night, reports from the border district said.

Though the cause of fire was not immediately known, the fire spread instantly in the Awoora village. From the residential structures, it jumped upon the local market and spread till the fire extinguishers reached the spot.

The fire was reported at around 10:45 pm and spread quite fast. Locals said it emerged from the commercial complex.

A spokesman of the Fire and Emergency Services said that these were two L shaped buildings housing almost 38 shops. “Of 38 shops, 14 are completely destroyed and others have partial damages,” the spokesman said. It included the J&K Bank branch that also suffered damage.

The official said that a total four residential structures are involved in the fire incident. Of them, three are two storeyed structures and one is a single level building. “The cause of fire is under police investigation,” the spokesman said.

Owoora is a village that is almost 15 kms from the main Kupwara town. Its closet fire station is Trehgam but it is still 10 Kms away.
