Clashes erupted after Friday prayers in old Barzulla area of the city while as police arrested dozens of people who tried to take a procession from Batamalo area after prayers. The arrestees include Hurriyat (G) leader Nissar Hussain Rather.

Dozens of protesters gathered after prayers and started shouting slogans against India and Israel in old Barzulla. Police tried to chase them away but they, the protesters start pelting stones on police resulting in ding dong battles.

Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani had called for protests against Israeli attacks on Gaza after prayers.

Meanwhile, amidst strict restrictions dozens of people managed to gather around Batamaloo area and tried to take out the traditional Muharrum procession towards Dalgate. Police swung into action and chased them away arresting many among them. Police sources said that arrestees include Nissar Hussain rather, the head of Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e Sharyat. Rather is also a Hurriyat (G) leader.

The authorities have imposed strict restrictions to prevent people from taking part in traditional Muharrum processions and anti Israel protests. Hundreds of police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel have been deployed for the purpose.
