Director Horticulture Kashmir, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat on Monday chaired a meeting to take stock of the damage caused due to recent snowfall.

The Director stressed on early assessment and cost estimation of losses, so that same can be presented before the government for early allocation of funds.

He reiterated that District Horticulture Officers should visit their respective areas to segregate the damage in partial, severe and full categories and draw the tentative damage cost for the funds to be allocated accordingly. Bhat maintained that once the cost estimation is done, free of cost plants would be distributed among the farmers.

The Director stressed upon adopting the scientific methods of developing orchards so that minimum damage is done to the trees during heavy snowfall. He also said that farmers should be made aware of the latest methods of pruning which helps a tree to gain more strength.

The Director asked the officials to increase the frequency of their field visits so that the feedbacks, grievances and other issues of the farmers are projected properly.

The meeting was attended by DHO’s, CHO’s of various districts and farm managers.
