SRINAGAR: A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted the Kashmir Valley on Saturday morning, triggering panic among residents, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage, officials said.
According to the Meteorological Department, the earthquake struck at 7:04:51 am IST and was felt across Srinagar and several other districts of the Valley.
Officials said the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Afghanistan at a latitude 36.442 degrees North and longitude 70.67 degrees East, at a depth of 215 kilometres.
The strong tremors prompted people to rush out of their homes and offices as a precaution.
Officials said no loss of life or damage to property had been reported from anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir till the filing of this report.
The authorities are monitoring the situation.
