Satisfied that conditions are conducive to hold Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir the Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the poll dates on October.

Election dates to the Jharkhand Assembly could also be announced simultaneously. “Top officials of the government including administrative secretaries of the key department were summoned to Secretariat hereWednesday to clear the pending files in view of the reports of the announcement of polls dates Tuesday next week,” sources told KNS.

As the term of the current J&K Assembly ends on January 19 next year and, if the electoral process is not completed before that, the state would have to be placed under Governor’s rule.

“The ECI after assessing the situation in both Srinagar and Jammu has conveyed its decision of holding elections on time to both Jammu & Kashmir Government and Ministry of Home Affairs. After the visit of the full commission to the state and interactions with stakeholders, including leaders of political  parties, the ECIO has ruled out the possibility of  postponing the elections,” they said.

Meanwhile, top officials of the government including administrative secretaries of the key government department were summoned to secretariat here Wednesday to clear the pending files in view of the reports of the announcement of polls dates Tuesday next week.

As KNS had already reported that General Administration Department (GAD) has been conveyed the decision by the Election Commission and asked to dispose of the pending files of urgent nature before the weekend.
