SRINAGAR

A day after the 50 hour gun battle ended in South Kashmir’s Pampore, security in Srinagar has been intensified across police remaining on tenterhooks throughout Tuesday.

According to KNS, Police conducted search operations and frisking at different places across Srinagar city, mainly at busy and sensitive places.

A top police official said that the surprise checks were conducted as pre-emptive measure to put pressure on the militants who may be eyeing on Srinagar to show their presence.

Pertinently, the 48-hour fierce gun battle on the outskirts of Srinagar ended on Monday evening with the killing of three heavily-armed militants holed up in a government building situated along the Srinagar-Jammu Highway.

The operation, which began on Saturday evening, saw five forces personnel including two Captains of elite commando units laying down their lives while battling the militants, suspected to be of foreign origin.

A civilian was killed in the crossfire between the two sides while 120 civilians were evacuated safely.

As the operation entered the third day on Wednesday, the Special Forces of the army maximised the force, using mortar shells to flush out the militants.

During the intense gunfight, the top floor of the building was set on fire which forced the ultras to shift towards one side of the complex where they were killed.
