SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have arrested eight drug peddlers and smugglers in Shopian and Baramulla, recovering contraband substances from their possession.

In Shopian, a police party led by Incharge Police Post Keegam intercepted two suspicious individuals at a checkpoint in Pirapora Keegam. Upon inspection, 184 grams of a substance resembling Charas wrapped in corn leaves was found in their possession. The individuals were identified as Bilal Ahmad Dar, son of Sonaullah Dar, resident of Arihal Pulwama, and Akir Ayoub Hakim, son of Mohd Ayoub, resident of Arihal Pulwama.

In another incident, a police party led by SHO PS Zainapora, under the supervision of SDPO Zainapora Riaz Ahmad, intercepted a vehicle with registration number JK13G-7741 at a checkpoint in Reban Shopian. However, upon spotting the police, both individuals in the vehicle abandoned it and managed to flee. Subsequently, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 3.5kgs of a substance resembling Poppy Straw. The vehicle was seized by the police.

In Baramulla, during routine patrolling at Juhama Baramulla, a police party under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Baramulla Sajjad Bukhari, assisted by Incharge PP Delina, arrested a wanted drug smuggler identified as Shabir Ahmad Lone, son of Ab Rehman Lone, resident of Nadihal Baramulla. A search of his person resulted in the recovery of 72 grams of a substance resembling charas.

Similarly, another police party, under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Baramulla Sajjad Bukhari and assisted by SHO PS Baramulla, apprehended two wanted drug smugglers at a checkpoint in Khanpora Baramulla. The individuals were identified as Shahid Ahmad Marazi, son of Ghulam Qadir, resident of Kanlibagh Baramulla, and Adil Ahmad Gogri, son of Bashir Ahmad, resident of Khanpora Baramulla. A search of their possession yielded 12 grams of a substance resembling Brown Sugar.

Furthermore, at a checkpoint in Janbazpora Baramulla near Juice Factory, another police party under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Baramulla, assisted by SHO PS Baramulla, arrested three wanted drug smugglers. The individuals were identified as Atiqullah Lone, son of Mohd Akbar Lone, resident of Tujjar Sharief Sopore; Gh Mohiuddin Dar, son of Ab Ahad Dar, resident of Ladoora Rafiabad Sopore; and Gulzar Ahmad Ganie, son of Habibullah Ganie, resident of Chijhama Rafiabad Sopore. Upon searching them, 101 grams of a substance resembling Brown Sugar was discovered.

All the accused have been arrested and taken to respective police stations, where they remain in custody. The vehicles used in the commission of the crimes have also been seized. Cases under relevant sections of the law have been registered in the respective police stations, and further investigations are underway.

The police urged community members to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling in their neighborhoods. They emphasized that individuals involved in drug peddling would be dealt with according to the law. The police’s consistent actions against drug peddlers aim to reassure the community that efforts are being made to keep society free from the menace of drugs. (KNO)
