The emergency situations ministry said rescuers were working “around the clock” to clear debris and assess the damage. Images released on social media showed a collapsed building and scattered wreckage. “Unfortunately, 11 people were killed,” the ministry according to New York Post stated, adding that at least 130 others were injured.

Independent Russian media outlets reported that the blast occurred at the Elastik gunpowder and ammunition plant. The facility has a history of deadly accidents, in 2021, a similar explosion there claimed 17 lives.

Local governor Pavel Malkov announced a day of mourning in the Ryazan region, saying flags would be lowered across the territory in tribute to the victims.

Fatal accidents at industrial plants are not uncommon in Russia, where concerns over safety standards and ageing infrastructure have long persisted.
