Two Special Police Officers (SPOs), who had deserted the police force last month and joined militancy, were Thursday shot dead in an encounter with Army in remote area of Gaddi in Doda District.

According to DIG DKR Nisar Ahmed, “after a gap of more than 4 years an encounter has taken place in Doda district, which has been almost free from any presence of militants.”

Sources said, “based on specific information, troops launched an operation in a remote Gaddi Doda belt around midnight last night.”

In the ensuing gun battle, two militants were killed in the wee hours on Thursday, DIG Police said, adding, the bodies have been recovered along with one AK rifle and an INSAS rifle with some ammunition.

Those killed in the encounter have been identified as Gul Mohammad Mingnoo alias Maulvi code name Gulla Tailor S/O Bashir Ahmed Mingnoo of Dandian Doda and Raiz Ahmed S/o Ab Rashid of Dedni Marmat, police said.

Sources said that Gul Mohd had surrendered as the District Commander of Lasker-e-Toiba (LeT) before the police in 2010 and joined as an SPO, Raiz had surrendered as the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in 2010.

Maulvi had joined LeT in 2003 and Raiz joined Hizb in 1999, they said, adding the duo deserted the police force in Doda on the night of September 7-8 2015 along with an AK rifle and an INSAS rifle with 60 and 70 rounds, and again joined militancy.

“We were tracking them and today killed them in an encounter in Gadi Nallah. The area has been free from militancy for the past several years and these two SPOs had run away with weapons but we eliminated them within shortest period,” Nisar Ahmed DIG Police said.

When the news of killing of the local militants spread in the town, traders, shopkeepers and private business establishments closed their business units. Soon after the bodies of the dead militant reached Doda, people in thousands demonstrated and raised pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans.

During the procession, minor clashes took place between the forces and people, however, there are no reports of any injury in the procession. Later, the dead bodies of the slain militants were taken to their native.

Thousands of people from Doda and its adjoining areas performed the Nimaz-e-Jinazah at Eid Gah.
