A militant was killed in an encounter in a Sopore village early Tuesday morning. Police said he was killed in an ambush at Akhoonpora Hartaar village that falls in Tarzoo belt on the Haigam crossing.

“We had information that the militants were on the move and we laid and ambush,” a police officer who was part of the exercise said. “They crossed and were challenged by us but they fired which started the encounter.”

The police officer said the encounter led to the killing of one militant while his accomplice managed to escape. The slain militant was identified as Umar Khataab, a Pakistani national. Police said he was district commander of Lashkar in north Kashmir and was active for last four years.

Police said they recovered an AK 47, a grenade and a magazine from the slain militant.

They said they have launched a search in the belt to trace the accomplice of the slain militant. The encounter was carried out by SOG and 32-Rashtriya Rifles. The encounter took place in open in the periphery of the village.
